Cleaning Your Motocross Bike – Why Bother?

There’s nothing like an epic day out on the bike tearing it up. However this will enviably mean your bike ends up dirty and grimy and yes it’ll need a clean.

Is that a sigh I heard! Let’s face it, we’d much rather be out chancing some fun than stuck getting rid of bit of muck, but cleaning is an important part in the maintenance processes.

Why clean your motocross bike?

– For starters, it’ll keep it in good shape and prevent any damage. Dirt, mud, sand, and water can get into everything, the engine, the chain, the brakes, causing exaggerated corrosion and wear.

– In the long run you save money. It’s true! This is because of reduced wear and tear meaning less repairs and replacements. It also reduces the risk of breakdowns or even accidents.

– When cleaning your bike you are able to inspect it and spot any problems or issues that might need fixing or replacing.

Tips on Cleaning?

– First we need to get rid of the dirt. If possible, hosing the bike down while the dirt is still wet will take a lot less time than if it’s caked on and dried hard. A pressure washer can also make for light work. Of course a bucket of water and a brush works equally well, just needing a bit of good old-fashioned elbow grease. You can use chain degreasers and cleaning solutions to help cut through the mud and grime. Be careful not to spray water directly into the air filter, the exhaust, or the electrical components.

– We’ve got rid of the dirt so now it’s time to dry the bike down. You can use a towel, or cloth or even compressed air which is handy to get at those hard-to-reach areas.

– With a clean and dry bike it’s now time to lubricate the chain, cables, and pivot points reducing abrasive wear. This will also prevent rust and corrosion, ensuring smooth operation.

– A final polish using a soft cloth or a microfiber towel will give it a shiny and protective finish. You can also apply protective spray coating to help prevent dirt build-up, making cleaning the next time even quicker.
